PNG and WebP files with alpha transparency often render on Etsy with the transparent areas filled as black. Stickers, isolated product cutouts, and digital mockups look like they float on a harsh dark slab instead of the neutral grid buyers expect.

Etsy’s image pipeline is tuned for photographic JPEGs on light backgrounds. Alpha channels that look fine in Photoshop or Canva previews do not survive the same way once processed for search tiles and gallery views.

If you miss this step, you may think the listing is fine in admin while the public page looks broken. Re-uploads cost time; flattening once avoids repeated fixes.

Fix: merge layers onto white, cream, or another light solid that matches your brand, then export JPEG (sRGB, no alpha). Our re-upload recipe in rules library defaults to “no transparent background” for that reason.
