Why Etsy hover-zoom stops working

为什么 Etsy 放大会失效

  1. In our tests, a short side under 2000px turns image-zoom off.
  2. Do not trust a 794px right-click save — measure the file you uploaded.
  3. After every photo replace, confirm zoom on a full-width desktop browser.

I checked my own listing after a buyer asked about texture. Hover-zoom was gone. The page still opened fine — desktop buyers just could not magnify detail before adding to cart.

In our tests, a short side under 2000px turns zoom off entirely. That lines up with Etsy’s published photo-size guidance. We are not putting words in Etsy’s mouth — we are reporting what we see on live pages.

Why the page lies about size

The 794px trap catches almost everyone. I right-clicked my hero, saved it, and measured. It showed 794 wide. That number is the fast preview Etsy shows buyers so the page loads quickly — not your original upload.

Measure the file on your computer, or let TagPeek find the fuller source on the live listing. Treat a right-click save as a hint, never as proof.

How I confirm zoom is really on

Phones never show desktop hover. Narrow windows and browser zoom also mislead. I always re-check on a full-width desktop browser after I replace a photo.

A blurry 1200px export blown up to 2000px can pass the number check and still look soft when a buyer zooms in. TagPeek’s local checker shows softness and the zoom floor as separate rows so I see both.

The first-photo search floor (~635px) is a different check. You can pass 635px and still miss hover-zoom. You can also be zoom-ready and still need a tighter square crop for search grids.

If I sell print-on-demand, I reject under-size supplier files before they reach slot one. Jewelry and texture-heavy goods lose more when zoom is off than flat digital downloads do.

After I re-upload, I wait a bit for the page cache, then check again. If zoom stays off, I usually uploaded the wrong similar listing file — or the new original is still short on the short side.

We don't guess sales from fixing zoom. When zoom works, detail-oriented shoppers can actually check the product — and that is what makes them comfortable buying. I start with the free image checker on my master file, then confirm on the live page.
