Transparent PNGs render black on Etsy — here's the fix

透明 PNG 在 Etsy 上发黑 —— 这样修

  1. Flatten transparent PNG heroes to a solid shop-matching background.
  2. Re-check image-zoom after flatten — transparency fix ≠ pixel floor.
  3. Verify buyer-facing tiles on desktop and mobile, not only admin thumbs.

I learned this on a sticker listing: transparent PNGs looked perfect in Photoshop and turned charcoal gray — or outright black — on Etsy search grids. The issue is not mystery compression alone. It is how see-through backgrounds interact with Etsy’s image pipeline and the backdrop buyers see in dark-mode browsers.

Rule 08 in TagPeek’s rules library documents transparent background guidance. Our re-upload steps defaults to opaque product photos for predictable display. Sellers exporting logos, stickers, or digital mockups with clear backgrounds hit this most often.

Why transparent heroes go dark

See-through edges assume something will blend them against a chosen backdrop. Etsy category tiles and mobile search cards do not guarantee white behind your art. Soft half-transparent pixels that look fine on a checkerboard canvas collapse against dark UI borders.

The fix is boring and reliable: flatten to a solid background that matches your shop — usually white or light neutral for catalog consistency. Export JPEG at high quality for photos. PNG still works when you truly need transparency, but test on the live listing.

How I flatten without breaking zoom

TagPeek’s local detector flags transparency as a self-check so you catch it before upload. I combine that with crop previews so flattened backgrounds still place the product inside safe zones for square grids.

Sticker shops sometimes keep transparency for die-cut previews. If search heroes use transparency, verify on desktop and mobile listing views, not only in admin thumbnails.

Print-on-demand mockups with fake shadows on transparent PNGs often fail buyer trust even when backgrounds render correctly. Flattened natural shadows on opaque backgrounds usually read better at thumbnail scale.

Dark-mode Etsy apps can exaggerate gray fringes around hairline edges. Flattening with a one-pixel matting color reduces halos.

Do not confuse transparency issues with the 794px preview trap. Right-click saves can be both small and flattened wrong. Measure your export file locally.

Hover-zoom still applies to flattened JPEGs if the short side clears the published floor near 2000px. Transparency fixes display; pixels still control zoom separately per Rule 01.

First-photo 635px floors apply to flattened files too. A tiny transparent logo upscaled onto a large canvas passes dimensions while failing the squint test — crop tighter before flattening.

I batch flatten with Photoshop actions or Affinity macros. I record background color, flatten, export sRGB, run through TagPeek, and paste the recipe into the action notes.

Canva users: toggle background color before download. Transparent download is the default for some templates unless you set a backdrop.

Digital download listings showing transparent mockups in hero slots should still test buyer-facing tiles. Buyers judge files from the still hero, not the ZIP contents.

If black backgrounds are intentional brand style, verify contrast on both light and dark UI shells Etsy uses in different contexts.

Re-audit after Etsy image processing when you change only background color. Page cache can lag; private-window checks reduce false panic.

TagPeek does not upload your PNG for remote analysis. Local reads keep staging files on your machine — important when art is unreleased.

If flattening fixes display but zoom stays off, return to shortest-side measurement — two independent checks.

I keep a flattened finals folder separate from layered masters. Future edits need layers; Etsy needs predictable pixels.

Avoid semi-transparent white boxes behind text on heroes. They become muddy gray on dark backgrounds.

Transparency problems feel like platform bugs; most are fixable export choices I verify in ten seconds locally before I publish.

Image-size guidance: Etsy recommends at least 2000px on both sides. This tool measures image dimensions; it cannot establish live zoom availability from dimensions alone. Verify zoom on the listing itself.
