The 635px first-photo rule
635px 首图规则
Your first listing photo is the one Etsy repeats in search results, favorites grids, and many off-Etsy previews. It is not necessarily photo slot number one in your creative story, but it is the hero Etsy treats as the catalog cover. That is why the platform publishes a distinct size floor for it.
TagPeek cites a 635 pixel minimum width and height for the first photo in Rule 02, aligned with Etsy Help language about search visibility. Falling short does not always remove the listing, but it can demote how crisply you appear next to competitors who met the floor.
The 635px rule is separate from hover-zoom's 2000px shortest-side requirement. A 800px square might pass the first-photo check while keeping zoom disabled. A 2500px wide panorama might enable zoom but crop awkwardly in the 1:1 search tile if your product sits outside the safe zone.
Use the detector's crop previews to see how Etsy trims the same file across 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, and 5:4 frames. Orange safe zones mark areas likely to survive grid crops. Subject placement matters as much as raw resolution.
Mobile-first photography can accidentally shrink the short side. If you export vertical reels stills to a square canvas with wide margins, the product pixels might not fill enough of the frame to look sharp after downscaling.
Consistency across listings helps buyers recognize your shop. Keep hero exports on a shared preset: sRGB, sufficient short side for zoom if detail matters, and 635px or larger on both dimensions for the first slot.
TagPeek's listing health score bundles first-photo signals with tag and title checks. None of those numbers predict sales. They summarize how closely your live listing matches published requirements you can verify independently.
When you swap the first photo after launch, re-run the extension audit. Etsy reprocesses uploads; CDN caches can take time to catch up. A passing local file plus a failing live read usually means the wrong file uploaded or an old cache is showing.
Pair this rule with transparency and watermark self-checks in the detector. Etsy eligibility for some programs excludes watermarked heroes even when pixels are ample.
If you maintain separate photos for Pinterest or Instagram, still validate the Etsy hero on its own. Cross-posting compressed social exports is a common way shops dip under 635px without noticing.
Document the export recipe the detector generates in your shop wiki. New hires can paste the same dimensions and quality settings instead of guessing.
Read Rule 02 in the rules library for the official link, then open the photo checker feature page for how TagPeek applies the floor on live listings.
Square mockups with excessive padding shrink the product share of the frame. The 635px rule measures the file, but human shoppers still punish tiny subjects surrounded by empty margin. Crop tighter before you chase pixels.
Vintage items photographed on busy backgrounds need both resolution and clarity. Noise reduction can soften edges; balance export sharpening against blur heuristics in the detector.
If you A/B test heroes, change one variable at a time. Swapping photos and tags simultaneously makes it impossible to know which edit moved your TagPeek score.
International teams should note that Etsy Help URLs may redirect by locale while numeric floors stay the same. Our rules library links English Help for traceability; verify locally if your shop uses translated admin.
Handmade variance means two finished mugs may photograph differently. Standardize lighting and distance so the hero represents the typical item, then verify pixels on that representative shot.
Bundles with multiple items need heroes that read at thumbnail scale. A collage of four tiny products may technically pass 635px while failing the squint test in search.
If you migrate from another platform, re-export heroes instead of reusing compressed marketplace thumbnails. Those imports often arrive already under the first-photo floor.
Listing videos do not replace the still hero for grid crops. Treat video as supplemental while the first photo carries search square duty.
Run the detector after every camera firmware update. Rarely, in-camera resize settings silently drop sub-2000 short sides even when the viewfinder looks sharp.
Wholesale accounts with separate catalog photography should sync retail Etsy heroes from the same master when possible to avoid divergent crops between channels.
Seasonal overlays on heroes—holiday badges, sale ribbons—should stay inside the safe zone in crop previews. A badge clipped in search can look unprofessional even when raw pixels pass.
Macro texture shots for yarn or fabric need enough depth of field that the thumbnail still reads as material, not mud. Resolution fixes blur only when focus was correct at capture.
If you use AI upscalers, inspect edges for halos before upload. Halos survive 635px checks while failing buyer trust.
Shop sections that rotate featured listings should still audit each hero individually. A rotating feature does not normalize weak files.
Compare your first photo to competitors in the same search query on desktop. You are not copying their style; you are calibrating whether your thumbnail competes at card size.
