Etsy’s guidance says the first listing photo should be at least 635px in both width and height, or it may show lower in search results. This is separate from the minimum needed to publish — it is about how Etsy treats your hero image in discovery surfaces.
Search and category grids crop listings into square or near-square tiles. If the master file is tiny, Etsy must upscale or pad, which looks soft next to competitors who uploaded proper masters. The 635px floor is Etsy’s published line for keeping the hero legible in those crops.
Missing the floor does not always block upload, but it is a verifiable risk on the listing buyers see. TagPeek measures real pixels on the live first photo, not a downscaled CDN embed from the page HTML.
Fix: re-export the hero at least 635×635, ideally with headroom — our conservative recipe uses 2700×2025 (4:3) so one file can satisfy both this rule and the 2000px hover-zoom floor in Rule 01.
The 635px rule is independent of hover-zoom. An 800px square might pass here while zoom stays off, and a 2500px wide file might enable zoom but crop awkwardly if the product sits outside the 1:1 safe zone — see Rule 04.
Use the photo checker on your published URL or the free local image tool before you upload.
