Why Etsy turned your zoom off
为什么悬停放大不可用
If you sell on Etsy and hover zoom suddenly stopped working, you are not alone. Desktop buyers rely on magnifying texture and print detail before they add to cart. When zoom is off, the listing still loads, but the loupe cursor never appears. That is not a random glitch in most cases; it is how Etsy gates the feature.
Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels. Separately, in our tests, when the short side is under that line, hover-zoom is unavailable — not a softer zoom level. The feature simply does not appear. That is our observation, not a sentence Etsy Help prints as “we disable zoom.”
The confusion starts because the listing page itself rarely shows your master file. In the HTML, Etsy commonly serves CDN URLs with names like il_794xN. Those previews are convenient for fast page loads, but they are misleading when you right-click and check dimensions. A 794-pixel-wide image can look sharp on screen while your original upload was larger—or the opposite, if you upscaled a small file.
TagPeek treats the 794px preview as a diagnostic trap, not the source of truth. On a live listing, the Chrome extension resolves toward full-size URLs where Etsy exposes them, then applies the same 2000px shortest-side rule we document in Rule 01. On your hard drive, the free website detector reads the file directly, so you can fix photos before upload.
Another reason zoom appears broken is browser zoom or mobile view. Hover-to-zoom is a desktop interaction. Testing on a phone or a narrow window will not reproduce buyer behavior on a full-width browser. Always verify on desktop when you are debugging zoom.
Upscale workflows deserve caution. Some sellers export a 1200px design, upscale to 2000px in an editor, and expect Etsy to treat it as native resolution. The pixel count may pass the gate while blur heuristics fail human inspection. Our local detector surfaces softness separately from the zoom floor so you can see both issues.
First-photo rules interact with zoom but are not the same check. Etsy also publishes a 635px floor for the first listing photo in search contexts. You can meet 635px and still fail hover-zoom if the short side stays under 2000px. Conversely, a zoom-ready file still needs a strong square crop for search grids.
When you re-export, prefer sRGB and avoid unnecessary transparency on product photos. Etsy converts uploads for display; exotic color profiles can shift hues after conversion. Watermarks on the hero image can also affect eligibility for certain programs, which we flag as self-checks in the detector rather than automatic pass/fail.
If you recently replaced photos and zoom still looks off, clear cache and reopen the listing in a private window. CDN propagation can lag a few minutes, but persistent zoom-off after a large upload usually means the new file still misses the floor. Double-check the exported JPEG dimensions in your OS inspector, not the in-browser preview.
Keyword research tools will not tell you whether zoom is enabled on the listing you already published. That is intentional: marketplace research answers different questions than compliance on your live URL. TagPeek is built for the second moment—after publish—when Etsy renders the buyer view.
We do not estimate sales, rank, or revenue from fixing zoom. Passing the pixel check removes one friction point for detail-oriented shoppers. It aligns your listing with Etsy Help wording linked from our rules library.
Start with the free image checker if you still have the master file. Paste the re-upload recipe into your export workflow, then publish. Open the listing in Chrome with TagPeek to confirm zoom-on status on the live page. If it still reads off, compare the file you uploaded with the one you tested locally—mix-ups between similar SKUs happen often in busy shops.
Support forums sometimes suggest clearing cookies or switching browsers when zoom fails. Those steps rarely change Etsy’s pixel gate. Measure the upload instead. If the short side is even one pixel under the published floor, zoom stays off until you replace the asset.
Print-on-demand shops receive files from suppliers with inconsistent export settings. Build a receiving checklist: open the supplier JPEG, run the local detector, reject sub-threshold files before they reach slot one. Prevention is cheaper than swapping photos on live listings.
Jewelry macro shots need zoom more than flat digital downloads. For physical goods, treat hover-zoom as part of product education, not a nice-to-have. Buyers compare clasp detail across shops; zoom-off listings look less confident even when price and reviews are strong.
TagPeek records score movement when zoom flips from off to on after you re-upload. That audit trail helps teams separate CDN lag from genuine fix failures during busy launch weeks.
If you sell patterns or PDFs alongside physical variants, remember zoom applies to the photos buyers see for the physical SKU. Digital previews follow different buyer expectations but still benefit from crisp heroes in mixed shops.
Document your export preset in the shop wiki: width, height, JPEG quality, sharpening, and color profile. When zoom breaks after a team change, compare the preset to the last known good recipe from the detector instead of guessing.
